How My Classes Work
John Burns | Final Cut Pro Editor & Trainer
I’m John Burns, a Final Cut Pro editor and certified trainer offering personalized online classes. Since 2001, I’ve been helping editors and creators learn Final Cut Pro in a clear, approachable way that saves time and builds confidence.
My teaching philosophy is simple: if time is money, then learning to edit efficiently is one of the best investments you can make. Here’s how it all goes, super simple from start to finish.
Booking a Final Cut Pro 1 on 1 Session
Booking is quick, easy, and secure. Click the green booking button, choose how many hours you’d like, pick your times, and you’re done. Because my calendar is always up to date, once you book, your class is confirmed.
Choose Your Session Package
One-on-one time to tackle a specific problem or get your project moving.
Book this package →Go deeper and make real progress on your project.
Book this package →Best value for taking a project from start to finish.
Book this package →Totally Flexible Scheduling
Booking multiple hours doesn’t lock you into one long block. You choose what works for your schedule:
- Back to back: consecutive time slots for one longer session.
- Different times: separate time slots on the same day.
- Different days: space them out so you can work on your project between sessions.
💡 Tip: Sessions spread over a few days work great for bigger projects. Practice what you learned, then bring new questions to the next class.
Instant Confirmation
After your payment goes through, you’ll receive a final confirmation email with your booked date and time, plus a quick note about my cancellation policy.
Before Class
About 10 minutes before your class, you’ll receive an email with your Zoom link. That’s all the setup there is.
Joining Zoom: Two Easy Options
- Already have Zoom installed? Click the link and it opens right in the app. Need it? Download Zoom here.
- Don’t have Zoom? No problem. The link opens right in your web browser. (Downloading Zoom is free and usually runs a little smoother.)
💡 Tip: Open your email on the same computer you use for Final Cut Pro, so everything is ready the moment we start.
Have Ready Before We Start
- ✔ Your Final Cut Pro project (or the footage you’re about to start with)
- ✔ Any external drives your media lives on, plugged in
- ✔ A goal for the session, even a simple one like “finish my intro” or “fix my audio”
What Happens During Your Online Class
Once it’s class time, joining and getting started is easy. Here’s how each 60-minute session runs:
-
Join the Zoom Session
Click the Zoom link in your email. Whether you use the Zoom app or your web browser, it opens with whichever option you have available.
-
Get Connected
Once you’re in, it feels like I’m sitting right next to you. With two-way audio and video, we can talk, see each other, and work through your project just like an in-person class, without the commute.
- Real-time conversation: ask questions the moment they come up and get answers right away.
- Face-to-face connection: personal, relaxed, and easy to follow.
- Learn in your own setup: your computer, your Final Cut Pro, so everything applies to how you edit every day.
- Comfortable and convenient: learn from home or the office, with your files and drives within reach.
-
Share Your Screen
I’ll ask you to share your screen, then open Final Cut Pro and the project you want to work on. This is where online training really shines: I watch your project in real time and spot problems in seconds. No more describing an issue in an email or guessing which tutorial applies to you.
If something needs a quick fix, I can take control of your mouse (with your permission) and show you directly on your own project. You stay in charge the whole time and can take control back with a click.
💡 Tip: A headset or earbuds help keep the audio clear, but your computer’s built-in microphone and speakers work fine too.
-
Review and Start
We’ll spend a few minutes chatting about your project, looking at what you’ve done so far, and answering your questions. After that, we dive right in, working together in real time so you make progress and learn new techniques.
Work on Your Real Project, Get Real Results
Most people who contact me have already started a Final Cut Pro project, or are about to. That’s exactly how I like it. Instead of generic lessons, we work inside your project, with your footage, your deadline, and your goals.
You don’t leave with notes about what might work someday. You leave with problems solved, your project further along, and the know-how to finish it on your own after the session.
What We Can Tackle Inside Your Project
Whether you’re just getting started or deep into an edit, these are the hurdles I see most often. Bring yours, and we’ll fix them live on your own timeline.
- Media offline (the red screen)
Clips go missing after files are moved or a drive is disconnected. We’ll reconnect your media and set up your files properly, so your project stays intact all the way to the finish line. - Edits or clips “disappearing”
Work seems to vanish with no explanation. We’ll track down what happened in your project and put safeguards in place so your edits stay safe. - Libraries, Events, and Projects
The structure is different from other editors and easy to get tangled. We’ll look at how your project is organized and clean it up so you always know where everything lives. - The Magnetic Timeline
Clips shift unexpectedly and it’s unclear when to use Insert, Append, Overwrite, or Connect. You’ll practice on your own footage until the timeline works for you instead of against you. - Audio and video out of sync
Sound drifts or doesn’t line up, especially with external recorders. We’ll sync your actual clips and show you how to avoid the problem on future shoots. - Slow, laggy playback
Heavy 4K or H.265 footage stutters and stalls. We’ll set up proxy media and an optimized workflow on your project, so editing feels smooth from here on. - Import and file management settings
Choosing between copying files into the Library or leaving them in place causes full drives and broken links. We’ll choose the right setup for your project and your storage before problems start. - Rendering and export confusion
Files come out too big, too soft, or in the wrong format. We’ll pick the right settings for your destination, whether that’s YouTube, social media, or a client. - Audio levels and quality
Dialogue is too quiet, music drowns out voices, or sound distorts. We’ll mix your actual audio together so you learn what good sounds like in your own project. - Effects, titles, and color
Effects land on the wrong clip, keyframes get lost, and things pile up. We’ll apply, adjust, and refine them on your edit so you can keep polishing after class.
Keep Moving After the Session
My goal is for you to walk away able to keep going without me. By the end of class, you’ll know what to do next, why it works, and how to take your project all the way to completion.
Don’t see your problem on the list? If it’s in your project, we can work on it.
